There are a whole bunch of Ours / Jimmy Gnecco live recordings available at Archive.org. Unfortunately, a lot of effort is involved if you want these authorized bootlegs to look pretty in your iTunes library. Nobody likes mp3s without artist names, song titles and album titles properly tagged. That is always the first stuff I delete when I'm trying to avoid dropping a couple hundred bucks on a phatter external hard drive.

I've downloaded this unique Jimmy Gnecco show, converted the lossless .shm files (c'mon, who the heck uses that format?) into iPod friendly mp3s @320kbps with an application called xACT. I've typed in all of the song titles, and I've added some remedial photoshop cover art. I can't imagine that too many people have jumped through all of these hoops in order to listen to this show. Well I must say that it was worth the effort, and I am thrilled to share it with y'all! (I did the same with a really great Mike Watt bootleg from a 1998 show at The Probe in Hollywood.)

Ours second album Precious was in the can, but not yet in stores on the night of this performance at the Oradell, NJ coffee house. Accompanied by percussion, Jimmy opens the performance with a song that has never been released, "Time".

Later in the show, between songs, Jimmy talks about Sour, the early incarnation of Ours, and what broke them up. Included in the set are three songs from the extremely rare Ours/Sour 1994 independent release; "So Mean", "Dracula's Bride" and "The Mean Between Extremes".

Two songs that wouldn't be released for over 5 years, "God Only Wants You" and "Saint", and one that wouldn't be released for almost 8 years, "Gravity" were each heard that night at Cool Beans.

But the one track that I'm going to guess will be played most repeatedly is the stunning cover of a song very few singers should attempt, "Unchained Melody".

Sure to recapture some of its original glory, Rhino Records, the legendary Westwood storefront that provided music lovers with a place to commune, find great deals, and hear rising music stars from 1973 to 2005, is popping up again, just blocks from the original location, May 27 to June 12, 2011 to raise funds for The Recording Academy's popular music community services charity MusiCares.

Since the Rhino Pop Up Store is a fundraiser, we will have a suggested donation of $5-15 for each show, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Rod Melancon "Angola Blues" Live At Hotel Cafe 11.03.2010

On November 3rd, Louisiana born Rod Melancon took some time away from his sessions at Sonora Recorders in Los Angeles to play a show at the Hotel Cafe on the Cahuenga Corridor in Hollywood. Sitting in with Rod on this evening was some of L.A. country music's heaviest studio cats; Chad Watson - bass, Jim Salisbury - drums, Vern Monnett - lead guitar, Dean Parks - pedal steel. On Oct. 20, 1999, Bob Forrest and Josh Klinghoffer of The Bicycle Thief stopped by my old show on the now-defunct SpikeRadio.com for an interview and acoustic performance. Their album, You Come And Go Like A Pop Song had just recently been released by Goldenvoice, and they had an upcoming show to promote at The Viper Room. Between covers of Culture Club and Radiohead, (mostly) Bob & Josh talk about how they met, whether or not there is a future for Thelonious Monster and play three tunes from their album.

I was honored with the pleasure of sitting in the studio during the live webcast of this week's edition of All Up In The Interweb. Bob takes on the heavy subject of Love, and plays tunes from John Coltrane, The Pogues, Los Lobos, Victoria Williams, Elvis Costello, The Beatles and more. Unfortunately, he didn't spin one of my favorite "love"-themed songs, Boogie Down Production's "Love's Gonna Get'cha (Material Love)", but as a very special treat to only the most die-hard Thelonious Monster and Red Hot Chili Peppers fans, Bob closes the show with a song from his still-unreleased 1991 debut solo album Lucky...I Guess; a cover of Jimmy Ruffin's Motown classic "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted". Anthony Keidis probably doesn't want you to hear it.

Corey Taylor & Jason Christopher of Junk Beer Kidnap Band perform Wicked Game - Live At Knebworth Sonisphere

Corey Taylor performed a solo acoustic set this past Saturday at the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth. Accompanied by Jason Christopher (Black President, Junk Beer Kidnap Band), this rendition is beautifully dark and heavy, and one can only assume that the lyrics have taken on an especially poignant meaning to Taylor and his fans since the passing his Slipknot band mate Paul Grey. Take some time to read Jason's blog Bleeding Internally Since 1971. The man is a modern day Bukowski.

Spacemen 3 Almost Reunite

On July 15th, every former member of Spacemen 3, other than Jason Pierce, was in attendance at London's Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen for A Gang Bang for Your Eyes And Ears: Charity Art Show By And For Natty Brooker. Not only did Brooker create the art for Spacemen 3's final album Recurring, he did some time keeping time for Sonic Boom and Jason Spaceman.

I need some help identifying some of the cats performing this furious version of the Spacemen 3 anthem "Revolution" at Brooker's art show. If I am correct, that is the evening's man of honor behind the drum kit. Sonic Boom is obviously up front. I'm pretty sure the guitarist sitting with his back to the camera is current Spectrum member Jason Holt. He pulled the same schtick at Spectrum's May 2010 gig at Spaceland in Silver Lake. It's cool if it's 1988 and you are actually from Rugby, but even Pete Kember cracks a smile on stage in the 21st century. Stop being a poser, stand up and let us see your chops!

Another guitarist is standing with his back to the camera towards the right of the frame. Is this a former member of Spacemen 3, or is that the Jazz Butcher Pat Fish? Is that Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine at the far end of the stage?

I'm fairly certain the bass player is Guto Pryce from Welsh outfit Super Furry Animals. Guto is also in the current line-up of Spectrum. I liked the way he held it down at the Spaceland gig. On the studio recording of "Revolution", bassist Will Carruthers plays a little octave run down the neck of his bass during the song's coda. I've seen more than one bassist in Spectrum screw it up on stage. I recall Guto nailing it at Spaceland. It looks like he nailed in this performance, but I hope you don't actually expect to hear the bassline on YouTube.

If anyone can confirm or deny the identities of these musicians, please do so in the comments.

Everybody else seems to be getting along. Jason Pierce needs to get over whatever issues broke up the band. It is once again time to give all the fucked up children of the world Spacemen 3.

Last thing, is it just me or does Sonic Boom's mannerisms remind you of Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson? I never thought that any of the numerous times I've seen him perform, only from this YouTube clip.

Mike Watt & The Black Gang - Live From Hollywood 1998

Recorded live at The Probe in Hollywood on December 10, 1998, Watt is backed by The Black Gang; future member of Wilco Nels Cline (guitar) and former member of Claw Hammer Bob Lee (drums). The present time (relative to this recording) Geraldine Fibbers' lead singer Carla Bozulich takes the stage for a turn on the mic with "Drove Up From Pedro" and "Tuff Gnarl". Quite a cool assortment of covers; Bikini Kill, Television, John Cale, Chip & Tony Kinman, Blue Oyster Cult, Daniel Johnston.

Neurotic Outsiders - Live At The Viper Room 4.26.99

The Neurotic Outsiders are Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Duff McKagen & Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses and John Taylor of Duran Duran. The all-star quartet held court on quite a few legendary nights at the Viper Room on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. This particular evening saw a few tunes from their 1996 self-titled studio LP, as well as their usual covers of The Clash, The Damned and The Stooges, but the packed house was in for a unique treat. Before Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy joined the band on stage for a mini-reunion of The Cult, Sporty Spice, at the peak of the Spice Girls' fame, took a turn on the mic with renditions of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and the Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarachy In The U.K." Check out this vintage MTV News clip, then download the entire performance!
